Adam & Jon’s Frakking Favourite Films of 2016

*FilmFrak theme as Fanfare plays*

Well that happened. In April 2016 Jon and Adam teamed up to broadcast the very first episode of the podcast…and someone listened. Spawned out of desperation to somehow legitimize a lifetime spent individually feeding their obscene cinema obsessions and their singular drives to endlessly discuss all things motion picture with anyone in shouting distance. The mere whiff of encouragement they received from a small band of merry frakkers was enough so that this pair of anti-social degenerates is now airing their 10th episode. So first we would like to say thank you so much for tuning in.

2016 toyed with expectations as many of the franchise blockbusters disappointed but the sleeper and creeper hits from around the...

So you gave us a listen and then you encouraged us. Big Mistake, YOUR mistake! You said Beetlejuice three times. You said Candyman in a mirror. Hell you were crazy enough to walk upstairs and see what was making all that noise. You validated us and now Adam & Jon are doing this thing for real. Sure it sounds like we are bullshitting away as usual, but in our hearts we’re now taking this thing seriously. We even have an Act 1: Past – Act 2: Present – Act 3: Future format now like real professionals.

Looking back on what we watched since last we met this episode we chat about our HITCHCOCK marathon, MIDNIGHT SPECIAL, HIGH-RISE, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, HARDCORE HENRY, CRIMINAL, TRIPLE-9...

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL (2016)

Writer/Director: Jeff Nichols

Starring: Sam Shepard, Michael Shannon, Kristen Dunst, Adam Driver, Joel Edgerton,  Jaeden Lieberher,  Scott Haze, Bill Camp

Transmitting back to VHS staples like Carpenter’s STARMAN and Spielberg’s CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, on the surface MIDNIGHT SPECIAL is an 80’s style family sci-fi by way of chase flick and on that level it’s wholly satisfying. That’s to say this film has loftier goals than can be achieved within genre confines.

As the film opens we are plummeted right into the anxiety and adrenalin of being prey. Fugitive Roy Tomlin (Michael Shannon), his son Alton Meyer (Jaeden Lieberher) and state trooper Lucas (Joel Edgerton) are hiding out in a hotel room...

2015 was a pretty frakking stellar year for cinema. So much so I had to indulge in some numerical yoga with the Frakking Favourite 25 Films of 2015 list by adding 21 additional “Honorable Mentions”.

Breaking my usual ritual of obsessively researching the upcoming 12 month of cinema releases around New Years, it’s now the end of February and I’ve only just finished compiling the 2016 list. That means certain titles like THE REVENANT, HAIL CESEAR, TRIPLE-NINE and THE WITCH have already hit movie-houses and won’t feature. As of today there is officially 79 enticing films due to hit screens this year that made the short-list, here are the top 25!

Scratch that! Firstly, because I’m OCD in my studies, there were a few films from my Top 30 Most Fraki...

2014 was a banner year in the Bender house in cinema and 2015 shows a James Leer level of promise. After some Lebowski like investigation (read into that what you will) I’ve managed to detect 54 attractions that put a twinkle in my eye of varied brightness. Of those discoveries, 24 could be labeled wild card’s which leaves the magic 30 that I now present to you the reader with the proviso that they stimulate my own sensibilities and I hope yours too.

As the calendar year has already begun note worthy omissions from this list include the magnificence that is Paul Thomas Anderson’s detective yarn INHERENT VICE which I’ve been fortunate enough to already experience. (Subtle subtext I know...
