Favourite Fraking Soundtracks (1995 -2014)
Part 3 of 3; Compilation Soundtrack Albums.
Part 3 of 3; Vocal Compilation Soundtrack Albums (In alphabetical order)
Last week’s posts focused exclusively on instrumental scoring with Part 1 & Part 2 of my Favourite Fraking Soundtracks from 1995 to the present day. This week it’s time for Part 3, Vocal Compilation Soundtracks.
Unlike non-vocal film scoring, lyrical tracks can use their words to inform audiences of scene intent or foreshadow events to come. Comprised of familiar tracks they can also carry a nostalgic, sentimental weight or musically set a distinct time period. This type of songs from your youth, soundtrack of your life approach really began with George Lucas’ game changing white bread baby-boomer cruise back to the 50’s, AMERICAN GRAFITTI and later Lawrence Kasdan’s THE BIG CHILL.
Vocal soundtracks also can be a selection of contemporary tunes dictating a modern setting and sensibilities. Ever since the Bee Gee’s disco hit SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER soundtrack redefined the possible profit in record sales there has been big business in original songs by well known musical artists. These days nearly every big budget FX driven extravaganza will have a recognizable name releasing a song only available as part of the soundtrack. Remember Gun’s N Roses Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door from the DAYS OF THUNDER soundtrack or Bob Dylan’s PAT GARRETT & BILLY THE KID for Peckinpah.
More obscure or non-traditional music can reflect a certain mood in indie and art house films. (Hal Ashby’s HAROLD AND MAUDE) Popular chart topping hits catering to a broad audience tend to launch in comedies and mainstream drama…but, enough with the intro, you get the idea Vocal scoring can be used in as many unique and varied ways as instrumental and is just as effective in achieving the emotive or introspective chord needed to accompany on-screen visuals.
Below is the final list. Feel free to chime in with a comment. What are some of your favourites? Do you agree with the choices or anything else film related you want to share.

Nice list. I would’ve added Singles.
You are so right! There is always one. I actually own and love the SINGLES soundtrack. Was a game changer when that really got me into the Seattle sound.
