FORMAN vs FORMAN (2020)

A review by Adam Lovett

Director(s): Jakub Hejna, Helena Trestíková

Starring: Milos Forman

Oscar winning Director Milos Formans’ daunting filmography includes ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOOS NEST, AMADEUS, THE PEOPLE VERSUS LARRY FLYNT and MAN ON THE MOON. That alone would be enough to warrant an examination of his life but as the documentary FORMAN vs. FORMAN reveals his personal story is one that carries all the themes and ideals of his work. The pulsing desire for freedom of expression, of self. An inherit revolution against oppressive authority, or limitations...

THE RISE OF THE SYNTHS (2020)

A review by Adam Lovett

Writer/Director: Ivan Castell
Starring: John Carpenter, Carpenter Brut, Power Glove, Gunship, Miami 1984, Stallone 80, Gost

Nostalgia. In 2020 it’s a term that tends to be assigned as criticism. A shorthand for derivative, vapid art aimed at an audiences arrested development. Living in the past and achieving entertainment value only for those cursed by it. So, before I even begin this review let me just confess that around the neon soaked virtual halls of Film Frak the word “nostalgia” is not a negative in and of itself...

Won’t You Be My Neighbor

Director: Morgan Neville

Starring: Fred Rogers, Joanne Rogers, Betty Aberlin, Francois Clemmons, David Newell

A review by Jon Caron

Won’t You Be My Neighbor affected me far more than any other film I can think of in recent years. It has stirred a lot of memories and feelings inside of me that I have either chosen to put aside or suppress entirely. This review is going to get personal. I never get personal. Some of the closest people to me only know vague details of my upbringing, it’s something that while I acknowledge had a substantial part in forming who I am as a person, I choose not to dwell on or use it as either a crutch or some kind of ‘I overcame’ type story. It’s just my life...

Captain Fantastic (2016)

A Review by Jon Caron

Writer/Director: Matt Ross

Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Frank Langella, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Zahn

To paraphrase a line from the film, “That’s the plot, tell me how it made you FEEL.” So, without regurgitating too deeply on what Captain Fantastic is about, I will attempt to do just that…tell you how it made me feel. This is no easy task mind you, a film this deeply layered with philosophy, beauty and unabashed intellect, could be discussed for days. This is not just one of the best films of 2016, this is one of the best films ever made. Period.

In summation, Viggo Mortensen (Ben) is a super badass, hippy genius, who has been living in the woods for the better part of two decades along with his brood of seven children and up until recently ill wife, who now stays in a hos...

2015 was a pretty frakking stellar year for cinema. So much so I had to indulge in some numerical yoga with the Frakking Favourite 25 Films of 2015 list by adding 21 additional “Honorable Mentions”.

Breaking my usual ritual of obsessively researching the upcoming 12 month of cinema releases around New Years, it’s now the end of February and I’ve only just finished compiling the 2016 list. That means certain titles like THE REVENANT, HAIL CESEAR, TRIPLE-NINE and THE WITCH have already hit movie-houses and won’t feature. As of today there is officially 79 enticing films due to hit screens this year that made the short-list, here are the top 25!

Scratch that! Firstly, because I’m OCD in my studies, there were a few films from my Top 30 Most Fraki...

The frakker saw 91 films in 2015 and though there were some outright duds (TERMINATOR GENYSIS, SELF-LESS, THE VISIT) and failed to meet expectations disappointments (EVEREST, TALES OF HALLOWEEN, TRAINWRECK) for the most part it was a golden year in cinema. That I had to make a top 25 and then add an additional 20 plus titles to the honorable mentions is proof of the good time that was had in the darkened movie house this past 12 months. Now the preamble is done, there is just one more thing that I need to get out of the way before we can begin….

Stand alone favourite: STAR WARS; THE FORCE AWAKENS

Let’s be honest here, as a lifelong STAR WARS obsessed nut trying to be “objective” about the film franchise that made me a cinephile is as futi...

Top 30 Most Fraking Anticipated Films of 2015

2014 was a banner year in the Bender house in cinema and 2015 shows a James Leer level of promise. After some Lebowski like investigation (read into that what you will) I’ve managed to detect 54 attractions that put a twinkle in my eye of varied brightness. Of those discoveries, 24 could be labeled wild card’s which leaves the magic 30 that I now present to you the reader with the proviso that they stimulate my own sensibilities and I hope yours too.

As the calendar year has already begun note worthy omissions from this list include the magnificence that is Paul Thomas Anderson’s detective yarn INHERENT VICE which I’ve been fortunate enough to already experience. (Subtle subtext I know...

Fraking Favourite 20 Films of 2014

nightcrawler-600x450

I’m just going to state it upfront, 2014 has been the best fraking year in cinema in over a decade as far as I’m concerned. Spoilt for choice, the quality enticements have spanned all genres, budgets and distribution methods. That means that in compiling this list I had to make some truly painful, SOPHIE’S CHOICE type sacrifices with many fine achievements omitted.

I managed to see a total of 73 new releases this year, a far cry from the over 100 titles I used to cross off when I was a professional film journalist with all the complimentary VIP perks that entailed. The rub is that a handful of potential highlights have not been screened at the time of publication. (BOYHOOD, WHIPLASH and INTERSTELLAR being the big 3 I have yet to see)...
