THE IRISHMAN (2019)

A review by Adam Lovett

Writer/Director: Martin Scorsese
Starring: Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Harvey Keitel, Joe Pesci, Anna Paquin, Bobby Cannavale, Jesse Plemmions, Stephen Graham, Jack Huston

“What kind of man makes a call like that…”

Martin Scorsese has made his GODFATHER instead of another GOODFELLAS, not to detract from that films magnificence. This is a far more mature and contemplative gangster film than anything in his past canon.

The distinction begins with the way THE IRISHMAN never for a frame makes anyone look cool but instead exposes their scummy, selfish and petty underbelly...

Welcome to Film Frak: Episode 32

Regular listeners we need to apologize. It’s been a longtime in a galaxy far, far away since our last episode. Truth be told this one was recorded in June and it’s taken us until now to actually broadcast…but we have a good excuse. Film Frak Adam has aborted the American Dream and returned to that land down under.

Travelling internationally, setting up a new life, separation anxiety and mixed emotions at leaving the land of John Wayne and admittedly Film Frak Jon has meant that honestly until now Adam couldn’t face writing this lead-in.

Anyway, enough with the excuses, on with the show...

Film Frak: The Podcast#31: Frakking Most Anticipated of 2019

Welcome to Film Frak: Episode 31

With our best of 2018 episode in the rearview it’s time to look towards the future. Before that however we do some final 2018 housekeeping as well as examine some early 2019 entries that we’ve caught.

This month we review:

  • Velvet Buzzsaw
  • Polar
  • Piercing
  • Beast
  • High Flying Bird
  • Reign of the Supermen
  • Standoff at Sparrow Creek
  • Free Solo
  • Joan Jett

…then it’s onto the real business of the day with some 2019 releases that show the kind of traits we are lured by around these parts. We speculate on what they may deliver and why they have our attention.

Only time will tell which movies deliver and which fail t...

Adam & Jon’s Frakking Favourite Films of 2018

2018 saw our Film Frak podcast continue to flourish even as we failed to mentally mature a single frame. Aside from the audience multiplying we also managed to get some modicum of attention from filmmakers we admire via interweb/social media kismet interaction. Namely we loved their work and they happily encouraged us. Sure that’s probably more exciting for us than you, but hey this is the end of year wrap up and it’s time for a little self-love from this pair of wankers.

Staying on that theme this year was the stuff that dreams are made of as far as guest interviews. Thanks to fan of the show Steve Joiner for reaching out and offering his services...

FilmFrak Interview Special: The NAZI DOOMSDAY DEVICE Starring Fred Williamson

Recently we were honored to speak to the badass frakking living legend Fred Williamson, well emailed at least.

Appearing in over 130 feature films and TV Shows, Mr. Williamson is the iconic star of 70’s action classics like BLACK CAESAR, THREE THE HARD WAY, HELL UP IN HARLEM, HAMMER, BUCKTOWN and the original INGLORIOUS BASTARDS. He’s probably most recognizable to modern audiences for his part as Frost in Robert Rodriguez’s, Quentin Tarantino scripted FROM DUSK TILL DAWN.

Promoting his latest film NAZI DOOMSDAY DEVICE Williamson brings his own brand of take-no-shit ass-kickery to the interview. So enjoy reading this Film Frak moment with a bonafide cult hero.

BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE (2018)

A review by Adam Lovett

Writer/Director: Drew Goodard
Starring: Jeff Bridges, Jon Hamm, Chris Hemsworth, Dakota Johnson, Cynthia Erivo, Lewis Pullman, Cailee Spaeny, Shea Wigham

“Shit happens, get the whisky.”

Let’s be clear, BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE is a movie made by movie lovers for movie lovers. That simple. The type of pulpy goodness that grooves me made by a filmmaker fluent in the language of cinema.

Right from the extended opening static shot that sets it all in motion its clear we are in the hands of professionals. Unashamedly B-movie fodder, it’s a playful, stylish neo-noir tale full of characters that talk like they are in a movie without being meta…except for when they slyly are.

Packing a vibrant Hitchcockian quality that’s like i...

FIRST MAN (2018)

A review by Adam Lovett

Director: Damien Chazelle
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Kyle Chandler, Shea Wigham, Patrick Fuggit, Jason Clarke, Corey Stoll, Lukas Haas

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

This is what the cinematic sensory experience is all about. I’ve studied the moon landing all my life. I’ve read biographies on Neil Armstrong. ’I’ve watched hours of archival footage through documentaries. My imagination has been fueled by it since I was a child but I never ever expected to actually LIVE it!

In FIRST MAN I feel like I was thrust as close to the white knuckle reality of what it felt like to be in a Gemini or Apollo capsule...

Film Frak: The Podcast#28: THE VENOM OF MANDY

Welcome to Film Frak: Episode 28

Well you frakkers it’s October and you know what that means. It’s the month of horror. Sure we cover some other genres this show as the month has only just begun but of the nine flicks discussed 4 are new horror titles that achieve varying degrees of success or failure.

Aptly as a bonus Jon also deep dives into the traumatic nightmare of mental illness that is the console video game HELLBLADE.

We hope you have a frightfully ghoulish all hallows month full of things that go bump in the night. If you’re doing the 30 for 30 horrortober challenge would love to hear about some of the titles your screening.

Here’s the break...

That’s right the artist responsible for building the mechanical shark nicknamed Bruce in the original film as well as JAWS 2 is here. The man who Directed JAWS 3-D chats with us about his contributions to the trilogy of oceanic terror for Halloween.
